Jane Carter Woodrow

Jane is a scriptwriter, playwright, crime author and criminologist.

In autumn, 2017, she was awarded an Arts Council England and National Lottery grant to develop her work in theatre. She also has a writer’s residency at the Junction theatre where she is beginning her new play WHACK-A-MOLE, supported by artist development at Troop.

Her recent TV appearances include crime documentaries on the Wests and the Yorkshire Ripper, eg, BRITAIN’S MOST EVIL KILLERS, BORN TO KILL?, CRIMES THAT SHOOK BRITAIN, and in a 3-part drama documentary FRED AND ROSE WEST: The Untold Story, for Channel 5. She has also appeared on TV talking about her book BETWEEN TWO WORLDS: A DETECTIVE HOBAN NOVEL which is based on the life and times of the youngest ever Head of Leeds CID, Dennis Hoban. This won an honorary award at the San Francisco Book Festival 2015.

Jane’s writing credits include BBC2’s THE THIEVING HEADMISTRESS, starring Denis Lawson, Pauline Quirke, and Geoffrey Palmer, IN SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES, CORONATION STREET and THE BILL, and working on BBC’s PANORAMA.

Her true crime books include ROSE WEST: THE MAKING OF A MONSTER and AFTER EVIL – the story of a teenager whose mother was murdered by the Yorkshire Ripper. These are published by Hodder & Stoughton. Her stage play, LIFER: A WOMAN OF PRINCIPLE was performed at the Mumford theatre, Cambridge.

Jane has a PhD in Criminology from Cambridge University, and has published academic works from her extensive research with females in prison. She has spoken about her work, presenting the paper ‘A female sexually sadistic murderer – Rose West’. at the ‘Sexual Homicide Conference’ at the Scottish Policing College and on ‘The Use of Criminology in the World of Drama and Fiction’ at Anglia Ruskin..
