Jane Carter Woodrow

Jane is a television scriptwriter, playwright, crime author and criminologist. She has written crime dramas for television and appeared in crime documentaries, including for Channel 4, Channel 5, and the Crime & Investigation Channel, and also works as a consultant on crime documentaries and appears on ITV news items commenting on murder cases.

Jane is scheduled to appear in two further documentaries on Rose West and The Yorkshire Ripper, for Woodcut media, due for transmission in 2017.

 

She has writing space at the Junction Theatre, Cambridge, May 2017, to develop her work for Views from the Bridge. She is currently working on TAGGED, a noir six-part thriller for television.

 

 She recently appeared as an expert interviewee in a 3-part drama doc for Channel 5  FRED AND ROSE WEST: The Untold Story, made by Nine Lives Media and appeared on the Book It List on Made In Leeds TV, speaking about her book, Between Two Worlds: a Detective Hoban novel. This crime thriller is based on the life and times of Dennis Hoban, the former iconic, young Head of Leeds CID in the 1960s, and for which Jane won an honorary award at the San Francisco Book Festival in 2015.

 

In 2015 she was consultant and expert interviewee on CRIMES THAT SHOOK BRITAIN: Rose West, on the C&I Network, and appeared as expert interviewee on Two Four’s BORN TO KILL? a documentary about the Yorkshire Ripper for Channel 5.

 

In 2012 her first stage play, LIFER: A WOMAN OF PRINCIPLE was performed at the Mumford Theatre, Cambridge by the Moonstruck Theatre Company.

 

In 2012 & 2011 she produced her second non-fiction work, ROSE WEST: The Making of a Monster, published by Hodder & Stoughton, London. Her book AFTER EVIL – telling the story of a teenage boy whose mother was murdered by the Yorkshire Ripper – was also published by Hodder & Stoughton, London in 20019 and 2010.

 

Prior to this Jane was scriptwriter and creator of BBC2’s THE THIEVING HEADMISTRESS, a filmed drama starring Pauline Quirke, Denis Lawson and Geoffrey Palmer, and which Jane herself acted in as the prison officer. This told the true story of a headteacher (and former nun) at a south London school who went to prison for stealing half a million from the school budget.

 

Amongst Jane’s other TV scriptwriting credits she has written episodes of THE BILL, IN SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES, CORONATION STREET, short films for THIS MORNING and been researcher for BBC TV’s PANORAMA.

 

She has a Masters and PhD in Criminology from Cambridge University, and has published various academic works, as well as features in national magazines and newspapers, from the extensive research she has undertaken with offenders in prison.

 

She has spoken about her work at the Sexual Homicide Conference 2015, at the Scottish Policing College, Kincardine. This was entitled ‘A female sexually sadistic murderer – Rose West’ and she has given a public lecture on The Use of Criminology in the World of Drama and Fiction’.
