FIRE AT THORNFIELD HALL by Jane Stubbs

When the naïve and inexperienced teenager, Jane Eyre, penned her description of the fire at Thornfield Hall, she made the mistake of believing the version told to her by the boastful inn-keeper; in reality he was the last person to arrive at the scene.  Now the redoubtable housekeeper, Alice Fairfax, gives her own eye-witness account of the events; it is markedly different.
